In 1984, personal computers became widely available, and affordable, but were marketed to boys.
It didn't help that most movies were boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy is super special in some way and then "wins the girl".
Why does it matter that males had been playing on computers growing up?
It set an expectation that boys would grow up to use computers but did not enable girls/women to gain skills equally.

By employing people of diverse backgrounds and capabilities, products that end up in the hands of consumers can be better designed to meet the needs of a larger customer base through inclusive accessibility.
